This title is a Joan's Pick.
If you've ever wondered about the human stories behind news headlines of refugees leaving troubled zones heading for Europe, this is the book for you. I thought it was wonderful.
Fereiba and her family live an ordinary life in Kabul, but when her husband is murdered by the Taliban she realises that there's no future for them in Afghanistan, and sets out with forged documents and her three children, en route for England. They make it through Iran and Italy, but in Greece it all comes terribly unstuck and Saleem, the eldest child is separated from the others which sparks a whole new series of events.
Reading this book brought home to me the utter desperation which is prevalent for so many people in exactly this situation. It's stark, compassionate, compellingly readable, and a useful reminder of our own good fortune, when so many people have none.
