Odie O'Banion and his brother Albert are sent away to the brutal Lincoln Indian Training School where they're the only two white students and where they befriend two other children, also suffering hardship. When things go very bad for them, they escape and begin an epic canoe trip down the Mississippi River, aiming for St Louis where they believe they will find a home. Their journey is propelled by fear and danger as they're pursued by the police, encounter people who may or may not be trusted, and survive by their wits and instincts. It takes place during the Great Depression which provides a very atmospheric background, and I think it is storytelling of the highest order. I loved it. - Joan
