This book is set in an apparently dystopian future, which sees Ireland become a fascist state. Eilish is a mother of four living in Dublin. One day the GNSB (a new secret police) come looking for her husband who's a trade unionist, and when he is disappeared and then her eldest son is forced into national service it becomes a full time effort to hold the rest of her family together. The taking over of Ireland by fear and tyranny is incremental, one new insult being layered over another until the world they knew is completely gone and this one desperate mother takes things into her own hands to try to save her family. This is longlisted for the 2023 Booker prize. - Joan
