This title is a Joan's Pick.
Greg Iles writes about Mississippi and its many complexities better than anyone else I know. This book follows on from Natchez Burning and The Bone Tree, making for a truly brilliant epic - and although it can easily be read on its own, I'd recommend reading the other titles. The effort would be rewarded.
Penn Cage is a former prosecutor, now Mayor of Natchez, Mississippi - a small town of around 15,000 inhabitants - which still reverberates with the legacy of the 1960's civil rights movement, and an offshoot of the Ku Klux Klan. His father has been a well respected, much loved doctor in the town, but is now on trial for murder and refuses to co-operate with his defence. There are fifty years of secrets, corruption, and violence woven into the fabric of this small town, and he knows too much for anyone's good.
But this is a family which has already given so much in the pursuit of truth and justice, and finally there is an end in sight. Penn is determined to get to the heart of it, and the final gamble will put their lives on the line.
Meticulously planned and written, this is a master work from a great modern writer.
