This title is a Joan's Pick.
From a self professed white trash, genuine Appalachian hillbilly, this is a deeply moving story about the author's family who moved from Kentucky to Ohio looking for a better life which never came; and about the way in which successive economic downturns dispossessed and disenchanted them, and millions of others. This perhaps goes some way towards explaining the current middle class unhappiness with the political establishment, and the rise of Trump.
As per the stereotypes, the author's family was chaotic and dysfunctional, so his upbringing was tough. But J D Vance eventually got out of there, after a stint in the military, and a Yale law degree; and now he reflects on how far he's come, and what he left behind. This book is deeply moving and full of insight, and it's a timely story, set in America. But really, it could be anywhere.
