  • This is the perfect title for a book about the history of precision engineering - which is a story full of smart, smart people, thinkers with great ideas who were also problem solvers; and some landmark moments.
Most of us don#t stop to think about how (and why) the barrel of a gun came to be bored out; or the development of cars (the chapter on Rolls # Royce is great. Apparently the martini really didn#t spill!); the first jet engine; the development of technology and computer chips, and the Hubble Telescope (one of the most fascinating chapters I#ve ever read).
When things went wrong, these guys figured out what to do and the stories of what they then did are just extraordinary. Precision, with its challenging, daunting, sometimes overwhelming demands, is shown here to also be a thing of exceptional beauty. I am no engineer, and I loved it! - Joan
