Eddy Smallbone is seventeen, orphaned, and been raised by his Uncle who's a gentle, generous man though teenaged Eddy can't always see it. Eddy's a lost soul - a high school dropout with a number of small jobs mostly caring for other peoples' pets, through which he builds a community of interesting, quirky friends. He's trying to make sense of things but there are some things that cannot be made sense of - the Christchurch earthquake, his best friend Thos, and the memories he's trying to learn to live with. There isn't a word out of place in this book. I read it, loved it, cried, then went straight back to the beginning. Highly recommended. - Joan
