I adored the last book by this author - When the Moon is Low. Different theme, different characters but she's done it again. Also set in Afghanistan, this is a story about women and - in places less civilised than our own - what they have to put up with.

I adored the last book by this author - When the Moon is Low. Different theme, different characters but she's done it again. Also set in Afghanistan, this is a story about women and - in places less civilised than our own - what they have to put up with.
Zeba's husband is murdered and she's dispatched to the local prison, charged with the crime. She refuses to tell her lawyer what really happened which makes mounting a credible defense impossible, and her situation appears hopeless. But soon you understand that this is the way of life for so many women in that country. It's scarcely believable when you read about the crimes the other prison inmates are charged with, and Nadia Hashimi's sense of anger and injustice is contagious.
This story is heartbreaking and compelling. There are some lovely flashes of humour, and genuine warmth amongst women in the worst of situations - which makes you marvel at the strength they have in the middle of such wasted opportunity. Highly recommended. It's wonderful.
